On 5th March, Jonathan and Corinna Downes, the Director and Administrator of the Centre for Fortean Zoology [CFZ] the world's largest mystery animal research organisation, fly to Texas. Together with their friends and colleagues Richie and Naomi West who very generously financed the expedition, they will spend two weeks continuing the research into the Texas blue dogs, first carried out by Jonathan Downes in November 2004..

An American Weird Weekend?

It is difficult to comment on the blog at this time in that we must be undercover and not reveal our true location in order to protect our witness and the animals. It is her desire to not go public to protect these Texas Blue Dogs from the press and money-hungry hunters who would trade pelts for a few bucks (quid).

Yesterday the weather was miserable. We drove 4 hours through drizzle and later high winds stirred up by the Gulf. We are using a factory-modified Ford F150, which sits slightly higher than standard pickups, for our mode of transport. You could feel the 30-40 MPH winds buffet the truck in gale-like fashion.

That being said, we drove over to Conroe, Texas, last night for Jon to address and meet a group of crypto enthusiasts in the Houston area. The group was delightful and passionate. In fact, in our after-meeting dinner, we brought up Jon’s and my idea for creating an American Weird Weekend event within the year. An American Weird Weekend has sparked some interest and although nothing is planned to date, it seems to be gaining momentum. Jon will be lecturing in Austin whose motto is 'Keep Austin Weird.' Perhaps Austin would be an excellent venue for such convocation? What do you think?

  1. That is a WONDERFUL idea. The Weird Weekend is a great experience and it would be great for members across the pond to have their own event as probably most people can't get over to Devon in August. It would also add further weight to the CFZ's reputation as a truly international organisation.

  4. I'd definitely be behind the idea of an American WW (aside: find a town in the US called London [shouldn't be too hard] so you can have An American WW in London? OK, bad pun but somewhat appropriate given the topic of this blog)!
